Beware SEO sharks

Unfortunately the search engine optimisation business currently has a very bad name, there are a large number of what I term SEO sharks. There are many businesses out there that claim to know all about SEO and make all sorts of extravagant claims and will basically promise you anything in order to get you to part with your money.

Be very cautious when dealing with any SEO company unless it is one that comes recommended to you by a reliable source. Never respond to emails that turn up in your inbox promisingly all sorts of instant results as far as promoting websites concerned.

Obviously there are some good SEO companies but they are few and far between.  Listed below are some basic steps you should take to investigate any company you are considering outsourcing your search engine optimisation to.

How well does the SEO company website show up in Google?

This is the obvious place to start when evaluating an SEO company. Remember however that the company may be new in which case it will not show up as well as a company that has been established for many years.

Also bear in mind that some companies while advertising SEO expertise are actually web design companies that have been operating for a long time, and as a result will have a lot of links from websites that they have designed, this will help with their ranking within the Google search results.

I have seen many examples of so-called SEO companies that use pay-for-click advertising within Google but are extremely hard to find in the organic search results.

Check out their home page PageRank

Another obvious item to check is the PageRank of the SEO company’s homepage. I have seen numerous examples of so-called SEO companies some of which have been in existence for quite some time and yet still have only managed to achieve a PageRank of 1 or 2.  For a company that claims to offer professional SEO services this is frankly unacceptable.

Check the website of the SEO company for broken links

Another easy check to perform is to check the website belonging to an SEO company for broken links.

Let’s face it, if an SEO company has broken links on their own website, do you really think they can do a good job when auditing your website for items such as broken links, which can seriously harm your SEO efforts?

An excellent free link checker is the XENU program which you can download and install on your computer.

Do they provide both on-page and off-page SEO services?

Another important question to ask an SEO service provider is do they provide both on-page and off-page SEO services? There are many companies jumping onto the SEO services bandwagon which claim to offer an SEO service, but in fact will end up submitting your website to a long list of fairly useless directories and search engines that you have never heard of.

A good SEO service provider will provide both on-page and off-page SEO techniques, which when combined will offer true benefits to your company and over time you should see your company better represented within the search engine results.

Do they provide full contact details?

Check out the ‘contact us’ page on the website belonging to the SEO service provider and make sure that full details are included. In some cases you may only see a ‘contact us’ form with not so much as a phone number on it, let alone an address.

In other cases only a mobile phone number will be provided or PO Box number as an address.

Always look for a proper landline phone number combined with a full physical address.

Is the pricing structure clear?

Check out the pricing structure advertised on the SEO company’s website. If no prices are displayed, ask for a detailed written quote that relates to promoting your particular website.

Is the SEO work all done in-house or is it outsourced?

Finally check that the SEO company is performing all the SEO activities in-house rather than outsourcing to another company as some SEO company’s may be outsourcing work to third-party companies in different countries.

Never respond to SEO spam emails

Spam is Spam.  Just ignore and delete all the SEO emails that fill your inbox.  An ethical SEO company would never send out this sort of spam!

The best person to optimise your website is you

Hopefully you have now realized the simple truth that the best person to promote your website is you. You know all about your business. You know what your clients want. All you need are right skills to actually make this happen. Don’t let anyone tell you that search engine optimization is difficult because it is not. You just have to make sure you do it in the right way, using the right techniques and soon enough you will get the right results that you are looking for.
